Seagull Outboard Running Poorly

Yes, I still have one of these.....and for years it has worked well. Now however it runs well for a few minutes after cold start up, and then only sort of runs (but continues stalling) after that and only if I keep the choked closed. Any suggestions? I haven't replaced the spark plug as it does spark....

Thanks

Sounds like a fuel problem of some kind. filter getting pluged, dirt in the jets, crack in fuel line sucking air. What did the tip of the spark plug look like when you change it?
I'm shere other will chime in.

Something is causing it to either be getting too little fuel or too much air.Too little fuel: clogged fuel filter, jets, carb Too much air: Leak in intake tract, bad gasket, loose carb.

Thanks guys - that's what I suspected. The plug looks good and appears to be working well. I'll clean 'er out and check for leaks.

Your symptoms sound exactly like a partially plugged fuel line. Enough fuel leaks by to fill the carburetor bowl, but after running a few minutes the bowl level drops and it starts starving for fuel. The choke will compensate for a bit, but I suspect it will eventually die.

Definitely fuel starvation. If it runs good when its choked then just clean everything up including the carb and it'll run just fine again. If there is a bunch of light yellow junk in and around your float bowl its from ethanol fuel and each time you run your engine and ready to put it away close your fuel spigot so it'll run out of fuel and die on its own. That way there won't be any ethanol left in the carb.
Good luck. They are great engines from a bygone time.
kind reards,

take off the fuel bowl and clean the fuel inlet float valve ,and jet.

if you are not going to use the motor for a few weeks close off fuel and let the motor run dry,the next time you wount have the problem of varnish clogging up the carb.......

Never had my 5 h.p. Seagull fail to start after 3 or 4 pulls over a period of ten years. Haven't run it for about ten years. It will be interesting to know if it will start again in a few more years.

seagull

you could check the filter on the fuel tap if it has one it goes into the tank and can clog up

It was fuel related. I cleaned 'er out end to end and put some new fuel in. Starts first pull and never skips a beat now - just like she used to - thanks to everyone for the advice!

As far as I know, the only alternative (/w Seagull o/b) is to not run at all.
Notwithstanding, good luck.
