Sea Water leak in the pipe just before the Muffler Exhaust

Hi all,
I have a sea water leak on the pipe leading to the Muffler exhaust.
Is there any way to have a quick fix?
You can see on the videos attached where it is.
Thanks for your help,
Cheers, Sebastien.

I wonder if JB Weld might not work as a temporary fix.

Shade Tree mechanic would cut a large square of rubber from an inner tube, and a bunch of stainless clamps. They also make various pipe repair sleeves, you can find some at your local hardware store in the plumbing supplies.

Yup, I was thinking about JB Weld as well, but which one to choose for stainless steel resisting to salt water?

Calif, do you mean to put rubber around the stainless elbow to seal this? If that's the case, it will still corrode the steel, no?

If you can get tape all around the pipe, use the self-amalgating stuff. (rigging tape?)

The Exhaust hose needs be replaced but, as a temporary measure, you might find a patch with "FlexSeal Tape" a useful measure, wrapped with pressure tape, such as Rescue Tape, as a back-up. The foregoing worked for us when we suffered a crack in our exhaust hose just adjacent to the exhaust thru-hull while on a cruise to the Keys in '08. Worked for several weeks.

FWIW...

Is that the mixing elbow? If so I'd replace it and fix the current one via a welding shop and keep as a spare.

I have had good results with wrapping in glass cloth & resin i.e fibreglassing as long as it's after the water injection. Used it to fix our plastic muffler on a previous boat. Was still good after 4 years operation when it was sold. In the metal pipe a leak is likely to happen somewhere else tho before too long. Couldnt play yr video so couldnt see exactly what it is.
Let us know what you do please

Re: Sea Water leak in the pipe just before the Muffler Exhaust

We invented fibreglass-refinforced JB Weld years ago when we had a break in the nipple that connects to the mixing elbow. Did it as a temporary repair to get us into Brisbane from off the mouth of Moreton Bay in the middle of the night. It is still there years later. The only change is that the colour darkened after a few hours.

Thanks Compass790. It's right before the muffler on the metal pipe indeed.

Re: Sea Water leak in the pipe just before the Muffler Exhaust

Sebastien, I believe the term quick fix made us all think of temporary duct tape type fixes until replacement.
Regarding JB weld, I had an International Harvester with stainless window frames and such that kept breaking. Some I had welded (TIG or MIG ? I forget) others I glued with JB weld. The welded ones broke again and the glued ones didn't, I even glued a flat hinge to a flat frame and it worked, remarkable stuff that may or may not be permanent.
Was that hole a traumatic injury ? If it's rusting pinholes from the inside may have to replace.

Yea Fglassing or JBweld & glass cloth it will work on the metal pipe no worries but as they say if it's corroded it'll break out somewhere else later. Could be quite a while tho, impossible to say how long but certainly ok for temp repair. I've done this on internal outboard exhaust pipes too with long lasting results. Rough up the pipe a bit before putting resin on with coarse emery cloth.

Re: Sea Water leak in the pipe just before the Muffler Exhaust

Sebastian,if you need a quick fix to get you somewhere else then any of the patch systems suggested will suffice, however if you are looking to repair the leak then a new elbow is the only viable solution long term. If the pipe is not too badly corroded then a weld up may be possible however I personally would only do so and store it for future emergency use.
Cheers.
