Saab Vari-Pitch Drive

Anyone know much about these? What would one look for when testing a system.? Are they really quiet? (ie: if I hear a lot of noise expect trouble etc) What are the common failpoints?

I am only familiar with the Hundestadt and Volvo products....both of them required thoughtfull maintenance....which, for the most part was an occasional shot of water-emulsifying grease.
