Ring Gear for Perkins 4-236

Can I replace the ring gear in a Perkins 4-236 by removing the transmission, without moving the engine forward? I have a 1985 Chien Hwa Senator 35 Double Cabin Trawler

I'm not familiar with your particular engine room layout. Normally you would pull the trans, bell housing, then remove the flywheel to change out the ring gear. It would be a good time to replace the fwd trans seal and rear engine seal at the same time.
Depending on E/R clearance you might have to move the engine but I would try to do it without first.

The ring gear is machined all the way thru, so you can just turn it around. It's rare for a marine engine to need a ring gear because they don't get as many starts as cars. Be sure that's the problem.
Ditto with Diesel Bill. Good time to do the seals.
