Very helpful reading here over the years on many subjects, and here I am now with
retirement income and the
boat I built over decades and preparing for regular use on the beautiful NW waterways.
Over several years of building the
hull and fitting the
interior I finally found a great deal on a
Perkins 4.108 engine that had been totaled for loss of
oil pressure but showed no damage on
inspection, low time of only 60 hours use. They said it broke an
oil line which must've been the pressure
sensor because what else is there?
Anyway I assembled it after having the crank checked and its run beautifully for two
offshore trips and about 600 hours, but its noisy! And it's a shaker.
I attributed this to the canoe bodied design of my
boat in comparison to the deeper bilges of the other boats with this
engine, a globe for example.
The engine has always had a very clattery sound although it uses about .5 gallon per hour at 1800/2000
rpm and does not burn oil or smoke when properly timed. And it has a rock solid idle at almost 400
RPM and Ive just gone though and adjusted the valves and tweaked the timing as far back as possible without causing excessive
diesel exhaust smoke. And I even pulled the idler
gear and tightened the cam bearing that adjusts the lash as much as possible. It all helps a little and its running smoother but still clatters awfully.
Anyway if the
Perkins familiar pros here would please do me the favor of going to this YouTube link where I uploaded a video of the engine running at various speeds and then stopping with the usual clank, I would appreciate any insight. Maybe its just fine and Im being neurotic about it.
Please, this is just loaded for the audio content and the
phone is tipped around various directions to orient the microphone to the engine for listening. You may see up my nose and various directions without regard for the visual, as I
work my way around the engine, sorry!
The engine has always pretty much sounded just this way, fitted with a large Vetus water-lock and silencer and about six feet of
exhaust with gooseneck, so it has virtually no exhaust
noise, just this top end clatter.
Starts instantly...
Thanks everyone.
