Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

I'm confused by this thread when you all mention cross referencing. For instance, if you go to the page quoted by the post above mine, then expand the volvo-penta cross reference, it does not list the 3840525 VP part. Also, if you put 3840525 into their cross referencing tool here, it does not find anything (same if you put in the Perkins number y'all were referencing) : https://catalog.mann-filter.com//EU/eng

Also, how do you know what bypass pressure the OEM filter is spec'd at? I haven't been able to find this information to confirm anything in this thread.

First, the part numbers appear to be W 712/98 and W 712/83, not WK 712/98 and WK 712/83

Second, if you plug those numbers into the MANN lookup tool, it appears that you have reversed the part numbers with their corresponding specs.

W 712/83 is 0.8 bar
W 712/98 is 1.6 bar

Combined with my inability to get the same results as you when looking for cross referenced volvo parts or knowing how to figure out what Volvo's OEM bypass pressure specs, unfortunately I am leaning towards paying for the doubly-priced OEM part. If anyone can figure out what went wrong with this thread, it would be most appreciated.

However, The prices for previously recommended substitutes are no bargain. My search today came up with the WIX 57000 on Amazon is $31.22! The price for the Napa Gold 7000 is $47.51 but my veteran discount is still too high at $42.73.

I can't find any cross reference tying the Perkins #140517050 or any other to the VP #3840525.

Nothing correlated on the MANN cross reference site. These sites are a maze.

Any suggestions?

Mann 712 is without a bypass but all else the same. They're $6 at Advance.

Mann 917/1 on Amazon for $12 (21 micron., 1.1bar bypass)

Mann w920/17 will also fit and work fine. $11 @NAPA.

Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

Hello MJH,

you should be able to purchase them directly from Perkins trough their online shop so you are guaranteed the right filter with the right specs to an OK price.
See here: https://shop.perkins.com/parts/engin...ters/140517050

I have previously orderet there, but in EU, the shop is currently not awailable. However, in the US it should be possible to order.

Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

I have spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to locate some verification of cost effective alternatives to Volvo Penta 3840525 oil filter without success.

There are three-four different costs involved in purchasing the filter: retail price, sales tax, shipping, and customs if applicable. My MISSION was to see what verified alternatives could be had cheaper than the Volvo Penta 3840525 considering total cost.

First, I could not find the specifications for 3840525. I emailed Volvo Penta asking for them and they referred me to their dealer network for answers. The regional dealer I contacted had no such information. Perhaps your dealer will be more knowledgeable. Without those Volvo Penta specifications I don't see how any logical comparison can be made to alternative filters.

The Perkins website has no alternative listed for Volvo Penta 3804525. However, I did locate a UK website that had a Perkins filter specifically listed for the Volvo Penta D2-55 series under that specific name BUT NO PERKINS NUMBER. However, the cost plus shipping/customs made it more expensive. Additionally, I could not document that Perkins #140517050 is an approved alternative.

I did find an alternative Brand made in Eastern Europe, again specifically for the Volvo Penta D2 series, but have no knowledge of the product's quality.

A number of the manufacturer listed alternatives (WIX 57000, Napa Gold 7000) are more expensive than the Volvo Penta to start with.

The Fleetguard LF17476 is an alternative for Volvo Penta #3581621. I could not find any verification of its alternative to #3840525.

So, I have chosen to stick with Volvo Penta 3840525.

In finding the cheapest Volvo Penta 3840525 on the Internet shipping and sales tax frequently are more than the cost of the filter. If a retailer is in your neighborhood that could be to your advantage but you will still pay sales tax. I found one dealer that had free shipping on orders over $100 and did not charge sales tax for out-of-state orders, resulting in the lowest overall price, marinepartssource.com.

I hope this is of value to 3840525 users.

Try scraping the paint on your Volvo filter housing. I read somewhere or another about someone who scraped the paint off and found a Perkins underneath.

Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

Maybe this is being overthought a bit........

The base engine for the VP D2-55 was the Perkins 404c-22 for the earlier models ( up to the D2-55c or d) and then the Perkins 404d-22 for more recent models.
Filter numbers for these two Perkins models seem to be:
#140517050 small bodied filter for marine and automotive applications
# 2654407 large bodied filter for industrial type applications with more available space.

These Perkins numbers seem to be available at reasonable prices, and easily cross over to Wix numbers #51348 or #51459.

Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

I’m going about this from a different perspective.
I’m sick of the mess of the horizontal mounted VP filter (3840525) on my D1-30s and will install a remote vertical mount filter. Thus, I’m looking for the gross filter dimensions for the appropriate adapter (apparently Derale 15715) which are <3”diameter x 3/4-16 and will use a FRAM ExtraGuard PH8A for $3.69 from Amazon. And before you say FRAM ick, bla, bla, research it a bit more and you will find that they are pretty good filters @ 95% filtration <20 microns and 99% for >10 microns. (ISO 4548-12). Which is probably the same standard that the other manufacturers use.

I may be making a mistake but if a $4 filter change is easier, simpler and cleaner… I will do it more often. That alone should increase the life of the oil and the life of the engine.
Am I wrong?

Re: Replacement to Volvo OEM filter 3840525

A vertically mounted remote oil filter is a nice idea. Clean and more convenient filter access. I have been using a remote on my D2-55 since I did the installation of the engine in my boat, 8 years ago.

Two things I might caution regarding the Derale remote adapter that you mentioned:
- the oil pressure hoses appear to be secured to the threaded hose barbs with hose clamps. I think that’s a formula for disaster. A loose or corroded clamp will dump all the oil into the bilge in a heartbeat. I would use swedged or threaded on hose fittings.
- I have heard of die cast aluminum remote filter heads corroding quickly in the marine environment because they were made of an unsuitable alloy. Don’t know if that applies to the Derale kit, but you should be aware of it.

So which one did you use?

Fram.,ick.
Cut a FRAM open and compare it to WIX, OE,Bosch, Mann or others and you'll see you get what you pay for.
