Rebuild 2x 8v71 Detroits

Hi

Am just starting to get quotes for engine rebuild kits, injectors etc for 2x 8v71 NA, from around the world.

With our exchange rate US$1 = Aus$.75c plus airfreight, this is proving a costly exercise.

Is there anyone out there who can advise on a reasonably priced supplier/person and one who does not need to have injectors to exchange.

Cheers assistance and advise would be much appreciated.

Re: Rebuild 2x 8v71 Detroits

This post is kinda old, but when I buy Detroit engine kits it never includes the injectors. I've never seen an engine kit that includes injectors and I've been rebuilding Detroits since 1969 in the US. Most people send their existing injectors to a rebuilder.
You need to write down the numbers on the sleeves and the cylinder they came out of. Because of small machining differences, there are many sleeves available to insure each cylinder outputs the same hp. With the sleeve numbers, the kit seller matches what you had.
A couple places I've used:

Thanks for your reply.

Yes have seen these two suppliers on line - but problem with injectors are - they want your old ones - so to send from Australia - to USA then back again -- not cost effective.

I'm hoping my mechanic is aware of the small indifferences with sleeves etc but have to put my trust in him as most mechanics here who have worked on Detroits - have retired!!

Cats ( huge mining industry here) are big with Volvo, Cummins and a few Fiats and Man being the majority of marine motors.

MAny thanks again for your response and obvious knowledge of these motors.

Here in the USA I have my injectors rebuilt at a shop that rebuilds diesel injection pumps. I feel certain there similar shops in Australia. If not get me the part number for your injectors and I bet my local shop can get you a set. Thx-Ace

Thanks again.

Yes several workshops here that can do them -- but wanted $A150 each (USA$200) anyhow have found a guy that will do it for less - so let's hope pintels aren't buggered!!

Cheers

A bloke I know is a bit of a womaniser - took a woman to one of those bridges where you inscribe your name on a lock, fasten it to the bridge - then throw the key into the water.
He inscribed it 'To my darling' then used a combination lock ----

You can rebuild the injectors yourself, I have. Depending on what injectors you have, parts are here:
https://dieselpro.com/detroit-diesel...injectors.html
But it adds up to near what a rebuilt injector costs in the US.

Re: Rebuild 2x 8v71 Detroits

Thanks guys - appreciate your sensible replies.

It was the 'core deposit' that was an unknown fact to me as I had removed the injectors but - when the boat sunk again - couldn't believe my luck - I dropped my bundle and didn't see to them properly, so have gathered some rust which i think a couple may be U/S.
Think I have sorted and found a guy here who will check and only charge for new ones - if needed.
We slip boat next week - so will be an experience - still trying to get advise on how/what needs to be done to lift off top to get motors out.
How is top fixed on - simply silicon or fibreglassed?
Suppose when we take the lining out - all will be revealed!
Cheers
