Re-powering Volvo MD2030

Hi All,

I'm looking at re-powering my Sadler Starlight 35 from a Volvo Penta MD2030 with MS2A Gearbox to a D1-30. I'd like to keep the old gearbox, does anyone know if it can be made to mate D1-30. An extensive googling hasn't yielded an answer!
Cheers
Andrew

Arguably the 2030 is a better engine. Have you considered a rebuild

Yes, considering re-build too. The engine is 1990 and the hour counter is bust / has been since we bought the boat so we don't know how many hours it's done.

The basic block is Perkins and good for 10000 hours

The hour counter is probably the VDO lcd counter is it. ?

Sailing boats engine struggle to reach 100 hours a season , so in my view this is a 2500 hours engine typically. Well worth a rebuild and some TLC.

Re: Re-powering Volvo MD2030

As mentioned above, the VP MD2030 engine is built on a Shibaura/Perkins block, and is good for many hours. The D1-30 engine is also built on a Shibaura/Perkins block, just the next generation. It too will go for many hours.

To answer the question which you asked, yes, your MS2-A gear box can be fitted to the D1-30 engine, but the bits and pieces are a little different than those used on the 2030.

The flywheel housings on the two engines are different. The 2030 has a larger adapter plate that the gearbox bolts to, while the D1-30 uses a different, smaller adapter plate for the ZF based gearboxes used today.

For you to use your MS2 gear on a D1-30 you would need to source an adapter plate as shown here in the first photo. This is available from VP as shown in the first photo, or also itís the same basic plate currently used on the 130 saildrive. Both would work.

Secondly you would need to swap the torsional damper supplied on the D1-30 engine with a different one as was supplied on the old 2030 engine. The bolt pattern is the same. Second photo..

Hope that gives you the info you need.
