Hi Mates,

I just found out O_rings is OK but the lip of the container (cup) has broken. I want to buy a genetic seawater strainer, but I don't know what is the sea water volume required by Yanmar 240 Hp . In my local store, there are two types of strainer. One is 40LPM and the Other is 90 LPM. The 40 LPM is fitted to the space. Anyone has the idea? I look through the manual of Yanmar 4LHA and couldn't find the information.

when my cork gasket was too compressed to seal I cut a piece of EPDM roofing mat'l (from spares) to a circle to fit the cap - doesn't need to be a ring. Voila! Good 3 years now. Will be checking the hoses this spring & looking to see if I can raise the strainer above water line. Thank for the post!

Had the same experience but even worse with a boat purchased a year ago. The bronze raw water strainer broke as I tried (gently) to open it for inspection.

Closing all seacocks when away is the absolutely right practice even with my fully replaced 11 Trudesign seacocks, fittings and plumbing.

I removed all bronze raw water strainers (refrigerators, a/c) and replaced with over the waterline plastic strainers. Yes, I had to also replace the pumps to self priming, but this is a major safety concern. I do not trust strainers and pumps below the waterline.

Have had several instances where a c-clamp and two pieces of flat wood or metal got used to seal a busted hose.

Our GROCO strainer tie rods broke, same results. I just happened to be doing my periodic walk about while motor sailing. I found water spraying in alarming volume. I tied a tourniquet top to bottom and used a screwdriver to twist-tighten the line. This nearly sealed it. I now carry spare all-thread and clamps.

Another advantage of sea strainers above the waterline: When laying up for a while in the winter I remove the cover and run four gallons of "Salt Away" mix through the engine from a bucket and hose in the cockpit. Gravity feed will keep up with the flow needed by my Beta 14.

Thanks for sharing. A friend's Hinckley 52 had a similar failure, in that case I believe one of the "ears" broke. He had a couple of feet of water over the floor boards and a huge repair bill. I replaced my strainers with less fragile designs.
