Raw water hose burst

Hello,

Yanmar2qm15. Screen shot from a video i was filming with my phone. Ill see if i can upload that as well.

So the original Morse throttle/shifter had an internal piece snap. Long story short, is that i replaced it with a dometic side mounted controller.

I put in new cables. Then I started up the engine to see how it idled and what not. It seemed to be going pretty well. I had noticed a new leak in the lazarette where the inside half of the new controller is located. Figured I'd look into that later.

So its running smoothly, its spurting water out the stern regularly and the same amount that I've ever seen. I decide to rev it up and take a look at the connections. I was taking a video when the raw water hose burst at the engine block connection (shown above).

My theory right now is that leak from before was because I possibly cracked the (very) old hose from the inside while farting around installing the new controller. Which caused the sleeve to fill up and burst.

However, my worry is that there is back pressure building up for some reason? Maybe, its because i set the throttle settings at the choke incorrectly?

I have new 200psi (not steel reinf.) red rubber hose and im hoping make sure that im not just going to blow up another hose.

I look forward to your responses.

Thanks,
AB

P.S. ill try and upload the video as well.

Re: Raw water hose burst

You should replace all rubber hoses every 10 years. Rubber ages with time due to heat, oxidation, chemicals, and phyical stress. Hot water ages it especially fast. The aging causes it to become more likely to tear, brittle and lower tensile strength. You wouldn't drive a car at 60mph on 20 year old tires.

If your engine mounts are over 10 years old I'd consider changing them too.

Hi Le Baronne and welcome to the forum.
Wow, that’s some bulge. Very odd in a hose that would/should have practically no back pressure.

Check the water fittings on the exhaust elbow. They can get plugged up quite a bit before you get engine overheating. I found right where the fitting screws into the elbow the worst spot for buildups.
