The VP D2-40
engine is based on the Perkins/ISM 404-15 series industrial
engine. Early models of the D2-40 were based on the 404c series, and then changed to the 404d when
Perkins replaced the c with the d. Major differences are in the combustion chamber design and the governor, changes
Perkins made to meet emission requirements in the US and
Europe. Visually the front of the governor case above the sea
water pump is flat on the C version and rounded on the D version, plus the C version has
oil fill on the valve cover only, and the D has
oil fill on both the valve cover and the timing case.
All the marineization is designed by VP and built/ installed in the UK Perkins factory.
Electrical systems are
Volvo spec except for the glow plugs and starter.
