Perkins starter spacer

So I got a new reduction starter for my Perkins 4.236. I had to use a hammer to get the spacer off of the old one. Now I can't get the spacer on the new one. I've tried lubing it up and hammering on. I've tried using bolts to squeeze it on (the bolts stripped). Now I'm out of ideas. It just won't go on the last couple inches to get flush so I can re attach it to the engine. Anyone got any ideas for how to get it on, or any work arounds? Thanks

Re: Perkins starter spacer

Glad to hear about this pitfall in getting a new starter. If it were me, I have a die grinder so I would hog out the ID. The ID is not that important, it's the thickness.
