Perkins Starter

This is probably not engine specific. We are replacing the starter motor on a Perkins 4.236 with a non OEM starter and the wiring seems to be different. There are the standard +/- 12V battery cable posts on the starter, but the external solenoid has two small posts labeled IGN and RELAY. The first seems obvious and we hooked up the wire that comes from the ignition switch. That wire goes through an external relay and goes from 16 gauge to 10 gauge. Starter works. But for the world I can not figure out the use of the other post. It it not energized when the starter is not on. Have not tested it while starting. Any thoughts?

That other terminal is not used on a diesel. On a gas engine, that terminal supplies power to the coil during cranking.
