Perkins 4108 massive oil leak

Hi, I have a massive oil leak beside the oil filter. I think that it is spraying out oil when it is 3k rpm(high rpm). It's spraying around 50cm to one direction. I bought the boat 3 months ago. I didn't have the problem before. The problem started to happen when I cleaned the air filter and then it got more power (max 3000rpm before 2.4rpm) and no more black smoke. I think that when it got more rpm it gets more oil pressure and starts to leak. I tidied up the oil hose but it did nothing. For me, it looks like it is missing one bolt. I think that I should block that hole with a bolt with a copper washer. Because in another site that hole is blocked.

In this video about 1,6k rpm no leak but I can see oil shine in the hole.

Any ideas? Thanks

Why not post images here instead of links to another site. I'm in my 70s, a member of the analog generations, and can figure it out.
The hole is probably a threaded bolt hole that passes near a pressurized oil gallery. I would guess a small hole developed. A bolt with sealer should solve the issue. Clean out the oil with some solvent/cleaner first.

Most marine engines don't have air cleaners. My 4108 doesn't. Just an air silencer. They're not expected to be operating in dusty conditions.

Have you changed the oil filter? A faulty or improperly attached oil filter can leak.

You should get 4000 RPM, if not you may be over-propped.

4,000 rpms from a Perkins 4-108? Holy mackerel? That's a LOT of rpms for that engine. I have a 4-108 with about 3,500 hours on it. Runs and starts great. But I don't take it over 2,000 rpms. At that rpm, it pushes a 21,000 lb. Endeavour 37 at 6 knots. Steady 60 lbs. oil pressure, 175 degrees temp. I recently replaced the rear main oil seal (awful job with the engine in the boat). I would never take this engine anywhere near 3,000 rpms, let alone 4,000 rpms. But... to each his own.

I had a 4-108 for many years. The specs on the engine claim 50 HP at 4000 rpm but no one I knew ran them above 2200. It is really a 35 HP engine claiming to be a 50. I replaced the 4-108 with a Beta 50 and the performance difference is amazing. The 4-108 is a 1.8 liter engine while the Beta is 2.2.

Re: Perkins 4108 massive oil leak

4000 RPM is only emergency power, nobody in their right mind would run at 4000 for more than a few minutes.
That being said, you should be able to turn 4000, otherwise you are over-propped.
Max Continuous, or Max Cruise is 3000.
I usually ran @ 70% of max continous as recommended by most diesel experts: 2100.
The 4-108 is rated at 51hp @ 4000 and it will deliver, but as any car engine rated @ 200 hp, you are not supposed to run it at Max rated power continously.

These are crazy numbers from an alien galaxy. We run 900 engine rpm, 2:1 to a 24” 3-blade variable pitch. Westerbeke 6 cyl, 115 Hp. It’s peacefully quiet and vibration free.

Hope you figure out the leak. I would expect it to leak at any rpm. More at high rpm. Good advice above.

OT, but OP's method is my preference. I don't want to be bombarded by huge hi res photos, especially when in a bandwidth/data challenged area. I want the choice to not view the photos.

Cant see what you have to lose by putting a bolt in that hole. Just try it.
Man I dont envy you changing the oil filter on that engine. What genius designed that?
