Perkins 4108 belt (watermaker)?

Hello,

I have a 1978 Cal 39 MkII with a 4108. It has a watermaker that I have never used (in years). That watermaker has (I think) a pump with a belt system mounted in the engine room. See photo... red circle. It’s an old model Cat pump. The belt has broken, so I am wondering if I need to replace it (again, I do not intend to use the watermaker anytime soon)?

Can I run the 4108 without that belt, or is the engine timing or the tension of other belts in amy way connected to this pump and belt? I know enough about diesels engines to be dangerous.

I can’t get the image to appear in this post, but it is at Imgur linked here.

I too have a Cal39 MKII, and it used to have a 4-108...

The only belt that you really need on the engine is the single belt that is driving the circulation pump (painted red) and the original alternator.

Then you have a set of twin belts driving something which we can’t see in the photo, probably a high output alternator.

If you don’t want to replace the water maker pump belt, don't. It won’t hurt anything if you leave the belt off.
