Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have bitten the bullet. I will be meeting the Mechanic on board Thursday morning and if its a leaky intake valve ect. The head will be comming off and away for reconditioning.
I am actually looking forward to having a reliable engine again.
I will post some pics when we get the head off.

So I am assuming you use the hose to listen for leaks?

Yes, a bit like a stethoscope. In fact you can buy dedicated stethoscopes for this purpose, but a tube in the ear is as good IMO.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Losers a little oil over time but not enough to be concerned about.
I am meeting the mechanic this morning so we should have hopefully we will have some answers.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

So we kept digging.
Pistons 2 & 3 are a bit pitted on the top and cylinders 2 & 3 are a little scoured. You can feel them with your fingers. 1 and 4 seem ok.
What to do??
I am seriously contemplating a new engine..
What do you think?
Sorry about all the pics. I do have more.

Pleased to hear you still have a sense of humour!
Is the block out ? If it is, clean up the pistons and give the bores a hone set of rings and shells and will be good for another 10 years. Just work the thing harder , your injectors are making it run way too rich. So give them a birthday. "Are you having fun yet"?

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Too late now, but, in combination with the original video, looks to me like you could have traced and rectified the cause of the popping sound, used less pitch in your prop and run the engine at a higher rpm to 'blow out' that carbon.

I'm assuming the flywheel end is to the left?

The pitting circled in red could indicate an engine that has sat unused for a while, or one that has ingested a small amount of water and then sat for a smaller amount of time.

If the flywheel end is to the left, the scuff marks circled in green could indicate an overloaded engine, often because of overpropping. For whatever reason, the flywheel-end cylinders often are the first to show wear.

A new engine seems drastic to me; Perkins parts are generally pretty reasonably priced, especially if you get them from the local ag or industrial dealer. If mechanics rates are out the box, since you have all the marinization parts already, a long block from a local forklift dealer could easily be as cheap as having your engine rebuilt, just marinize the long block yourself with the stuff you take off your old engine...

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Having a ball!
Heads off but the block is still aboard.
Plan is to figure out how to get the rest of it out through the companion way and Brad the mechanic is going to see if it can be saved. But they're starting think there could be a crack.
Time will tell.
Meanwhile we are looking at New engines.

Re: Perkins 404D-22 Making a horrible popping sound.

Depends on your plans for the future. Maybe lightly touch it up, slap it back together with new/refurbed injectors and organize a rebuild for the off season.

Parts are quite cheap in GB. Get an ag/car/... shop to rebuild it.
