Help! The last 2" of my oil dipstick broke off in the tube.

I don't think the broken part can get into the pan, the tube makes a hard 90 degree turn at the bottom and the piece is too long to make that turn.
I will be looking for a 1/4" magnet to fish in there to try to retrieve the piece anyway.

My real problem is finding a new dipstick. TAD is my best source for parts and they don't have one. They have a 24" that they tell me cannot be cut down to work. Mine is about 17".

Looking for a dipstick.
Perkins 4.154-200 series

Thanks

The dipstick tube is connected to the pan with a 3/8 hose. It should be easy to retrieve the broken dipstick once the tube is removed.

"Should be"!

Could not fish it out with bailing wire. Too far down for needle nose pliers.
Will look for a 1/4" magnet to try to drop down there. Or long skinny tweezers.

Re: Perkins 4.154 dipstick

You need a small maget tool. They make one that looks like a collapable car antenna, shorter and probably 1/4" magnet on the end. Why in the world cant you cut down a longer dipstik...? sounds like malarkey to me. The 4-154 is one of the harder Perkins to get parts for.

I would expect TAD would want to make the sale, their price was certainly worth the effort!

Autozone and pep boys advertise universal dipsicks. Will look at that.

I have the telescoping magnet but it is much too wide to fit a 3/8" tube.

That 90 degree turn will require draining some oil to remove thr tube.
Put the two pieces of the old dipstick together and braze them or use them and the marks on them to frabricate a new one out of coat hanger. A penney saved....;-)

There's a smaller, less common version of the telescoping magnet. mine is a Craftsman and measures .290 diameter magnet. looks like an ink pen when closed up.
