Perkins 4.108 Starter

Fellow sailors,

I want to purchase a new starter for my Perkins 4.108. The part number on the old one is 47920034A. I did a web search and see prices in the $500's for this exact part number. I find a few for around $300 that have the part number 47920034. No "A" on the end. Does anyone know what the "A" means?

As I understand it I need a:

12 V
13 tooth
Clockwise rotation

I do not mind paying $500 if that is truly the right, and best, starter I can get for the money. However, I do not want to get ripped off. I know if I call TAD they will give me good advice and sell me the right starter, but they are very expensive. I do not see any starters available from parts4engines.

Any direction would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Phil

There is a discussion on the perkins starter here including possible replacements http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...er-194838.html

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

47920034A is the original Lucas number for a 12V, 10 tooth, clockwise, direct drive starter. They are available new for about 580.00.

LUCAS: 42790141 47920141 54292967 623479201141 NSB418
LUCAS ELECTRICAL EUR: LRS1339
LUCAS MARINE: 47920034A
PERKINS: 2873B059
VOLVO: 859722
WHATCOM: 38312

ITEM DESCRIPTION: STARTER
OEM: LEECE NEVILLE
TYPE: PLGR
VOLTAGE: 12
POWER: 2.2 KW
ROTATION: CLOCKWISE
TOOTH COUNT: 10
GEAR OD: 1.547IN / 39.3MM

A new, gear reduction starter can have a different number of teeth, spin the engine faster, and cost less. There are many available for 130.00 or so, a place to start to be sure it fits is a good local starter/alternator shop, who can probably rebuild your starter for about the same money.

Or there's a direct-drive, 10 tooth, CW 12v replacement here for 120.00.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

That part number seems to be a 10 tooth. I don't know how critical it is to maintain the same tooth count on the starter, unless the tooth strip on the flywheel is some how different across different models, otherwise I don't think it's that critical. I bought this one a last year:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a 12 tooth Delco. It looked to be pretty good quality. I even took a peek inside a bit and the components seemed brand new. It's worked great for so far. Good, strong cranking in cool temperatures.

This was a drop-in replacement from my previous starter so I don't know if the bolt pattern, etc. would be exactly the same in yours. For the difference in price, it might be worth looking in to.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

Other issue is whether the new starter can be accommodated by the existing spacer plate or if a new one is required.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

I almost bought a spare back when I was taking off cruising. I decided to check out the one on the engine so I bought new brushes etc. When I took it apart it was pretty much new inside. Just cleaned it up and kept the brushes etc as spare instead. If it's not all rusty and etc, it's a thought. They dont get a lot of use compared with a car starter.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

I replaced mine with a newer lighter one. I did not look forward to getting the old heavy one back in. I did keep it as a spare but the new one does spin faster.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

There are at least 2 different pinion diameters, if I remember correctly one is 46.3 mm and the other is 39.3. This probably has a bigger bearing on selection than tooth count, but a starter shop is the one to tell for sure.

I bought a new one on ebay for my 4108 generator, about $100. Been using about 7 years.

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

Did the replacement start have the same dimensions for the bending? Was it annoyingly clanking? I just put a new 12 tooth reduction drive in place of my old heavy beast which was a 13 tooth direct drive. But it is very loud the entire operation. Stranded now in Laje Charles ,LA. Need good advice if you have any. Thx, the Tesla Crew

From what it's worth I am in the business and just have my clients call TAD for all their Perkins parts. They aren't the cheapest but are the best, have amazing after sale customer support, and will get you parts you need and stand behind them worldwide. Saving a few shekels here just isn't worth it; give them a call, get the right part, and go cruising!

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

We were in a jam and needed the starter asap so we could get out of a temporary lift slip. The owner of the Marina helped us out over the holidays even tho he didn’t have any slips available. But he needs his lift slip back very soon. Thank you for your response tho. It helps out when people respond. I did however install the starter and it seems to be quieting down a bit. When we get to Nee Orleans. We’ll have the old starter rebuilt and keep as a spare. Happy sailing and fair winds. Cheers, RJ and Chantal

Re: Perkins 4.108 Starter

Bumping up. Anyone found drop-in replacement for affordable price? I just removed mine and shopping for spare - just in case. This one is 13 tooth. Bringing it to USA and back to Mexico. I try to shop around in various tractor dealerships-any advise on best shot? Many thanks!
