Perkins 4.108 help

I can't seem to figure this out, and haven't been able to find a local mechanic to come take a look.

Engine won't start, won't even turn over, so we think it might be hydro-locked. I pulled the injectors out, and it turns over just fine. Put the injectors back in, engine almost fires but locks up again.

Any ideas?

When you removed the injectors, did it blow out fuel from 1 hole?

Unfortunately, I can't see the engine from the cockpit so I don't know. It did seem to blow out the WD40 I sprayed in three.

No, I mean after you try a start and it fails, pull the injectors and see it blows out enough fuel that that could cause the hyd lock you feel you might have. Put a towell over the engine to capture the fuel that might blow out. It would take an ounce of liquid maybe to cause the hyd lock. Here we are thinking about an out of control fuel inj. system. You could pull the injectors re- connect the lines and put a container under each nozzle and measure the quanity while you crank the engine.. If 1 is totally different that the others then you may have something.
On a different tack, imagine a broken valve train part the did not open a valve. That however would be a 'spongy" stop and you could feel that difference.

Just pulled the injectors out again, but this time it still won't turn over even with them out.

Do you mean with the starter or by a wrench on the crank bolt?

With the starter. I don't have a large enough wench to try turning the crank by hand. I'm stuck where the boat broke down, and only have what's on the boat or within walking distance.

Well try and move the big pully somehow. If it moves at all then you are golden. Now it's an electrical problem and you will be able to get going somehow.

Can't get it to budge by hand. I'll see if I can get hold of a large enough wrench tomorrow.

It's a sail boat, so I can still get home eventually. It would be awfully nice to have a backup engine, though.

Be creative, you could use a nice leather belt wraped around the pully with a stick in it.

don't know if could happen on a Perkins, but on my 4 cylinder jeep engine it sheared off a valve keeper and the valve dropped and bent. That would prevent a rollover. Pull the valve cover off and check the valve train. Just a thought. I just recently completed a complete rebuild of my 4-107 and can't think of much else. A broken ring could could catch, also.

Exactly, valve cover is easy to take off and inspect. Its an easy thing to eliminate.
