Perkins 4-108 Engine Tilt to Remove Bellhousing

Hey,

We are replacing the rear seal on our Perkins 4-108 and need to remove the bellhousing. Our boat has a v-drive, and the shaft comes through directly under the rear of the engine.

So basically there's no room to get a jack in to lift the engine like most people do. However, we do have good access to the rear lifting eye from directly above. We're planning on using a block and tackle to lift it up a few inches to get the mounts off then use some bracing underneath for safety. Is there any reason using the rear lifting eye for would be a bad idea? Do others not take this approach because they don't have the access?

Would appreciate your insight.

Thanks,
Roscoe

That's what the eye is for.
Just be careful about the strain on the front motor mounts and any wiring, fuel lines, hoses.

I'd consider using a small lever block for the lift, too. Just gives a bit finer control. I used the same method to lift the rear of my engine except I used the gearbox flange as the lift point.
