perkins 4-107 rebuild or replace

I own a 1969 Cal Jensen 36 pilothouse sloop, she is a great old girl and I love how she sails, the original perkins 4-107 runs fine but with 2,000 hours, should I consider a complete rebuild before cruising out of the country?

These are great motors. it won't need a rebuild for a long time. Around 4000 hrs. The average boat motors around 100 hrs a year.

Re: perkins 4-107 rebuild or replace

The 4.107s tend to leak a bit of oil from the rear main seal but are generally good engines. As long as compression is decent, I'd stick with it though I'd replace all bolt-on stuff such as water pumps (fresh and raw water), hoses, and heat exchanger. You may want to check compression.

2000 hours is not much. This engine could easily go 8000 hours if well tended. Do not ignore any leaks of any kind (good guidance for all Diesels, not just Perkins 4.107).

If I did replace, would go with Beta vs Yanmar, the two primary choices in US.

Good luck!

she doesn't leak any oil, water, raw of fresh..starts first crank, was asking as i have heard that if there is an issue out of the country, there may be no parts to repair, perhaps for the $700, I should just take a complete rebuild kit with me?

Change your pumps and heat exchanger and hoses. Use old as spares. No worries while you're gone. The pumps are pretty cheap - talk to folks at TAD diesel. You'll have enough to worry about. Might as well eliminate engine worries while it's easy.

Also, if you don't already have a Racor 500, get one with a vacuum gauge. A dual filter is expensive but great if you can find one on ebay. Your spares' kit should include a set of injectors and gasket set. Not sure how far you're going or how long you'll be gone, but that's a good spares kit for your engine. Personally, if someone were to offer me an old Perkins or a newer Yanmar, I'd take the Perkins. Slower turning. Less aluminum. But that's me.

Re: perkins 4-107 rebuild or replace

Your 4-107 is barely broken in. I just took apart my 4-108 which is the almost identical engine and has 5000 hours on it. When everything was measured it was at less than 50% of the allowable wear on the liners and the relevant bits. If your not leaking oil (a weakness on these engines) and the valve train doesn't need adjusting I would just stock up on spares and go.

If you take a rebuild kit remember the piston tops need to be machined to fit. See the manual. The engines were build all over the world. Parts shouldn't be a problem. Spare water pumps, injectors, starter would probably be more likely to be needed.

It's just run in, treat it with love and attention regularly and it will treat you well in return.

Re: perkins 4-107 rebuild or replace

Chris,

I have a Westerbeke 4-107 with about 29 hours on the meter. It came from a Whitaker Survival Capsule (used for the escape system on offshore structures). There is a long story behind this engine.
-Purchased engine while building a steel sailboat
-Engine ran fine inside the capsule
-I removed the engine and pickled it (what was I thinking when I chose diesel to fill the cylinders)
-During the many years of construction, the diesel passed by the rings, moisture contaminate two of the pistons which became locked in place
-I finally purchase replacement pistons, rings, liners, bearings to have the engine rebuilt by a local mechanic
-Mechanic became very ill, and managed to lose the transmission, heat exchanger and exhaust manifold (but he did get all of my parts installed)
-because of all of the missing parts, I went a different direction regarding engines
I am interested in selling this engine (for parts if necessary).
PM me if you are interested.

most of the parts can be got from any Massey-Ferguson tractor built after 1950 or so

Re: perkins 4-107 rebuild or replace

I had a Perkins 4-108 and it was extremely reliable.. 2000 hours is seriously nothing.. If you really take care of it with all of the basics and general stuff, you should really be able to go to 8000 to 10000 hours before a rebuild.. I've had other sailors convey similar experiences.. Hope this helps!!
