Penta 2003T – Electrical – what am I looking at?

Can anyone tell me what the black box is?
The black wire is going to ground.
The red wire is going to the alternator.

i take it the red wire is going to alternator output terminal ?? in which case it may be an "electrical noise suppressor"??

if red is connected as above you need to fix the connection btw before it shorts to ground

As Stone Beach said, its an alternator output filter, designed to reduce noise and ripple riding on the alternator output lead. Its an aftermarket part, not a Volvo item.
