there is no engine now, a V drive Volvo MD11 was removed by previous owner

I was afraid you were going to say that.

The MD11 had verry short engine beds in that boat. Repowering it is a challenge. Your going to want a vdrive that allows the drive to hang off of the engine and not require mounts on the drive. I did one with a Yanmar 3YM30 a few years ago and it was a PIA.

I repowered in 2009. Beta and Universal are both Kubota based engines and will fit with fairly easy engine bed modifications. We went with Universal because of availability, local support and slight price differential.

Total cost was 14K with everything replaced (cooling, exhaust, shaft, cutlass, prop). I did all removal and bed modifications. A mechanic did the final installation and alignment.

I have a Yanmar 3GM30 in my 323, it seems to fit just fine, although anything in the 323 will be pretty snug. I can upload some pictures tomorrow if you would like to see the fit.

One thing you may have to get used to is the transmission being the opposite. On mine lever forward is reverse and backward is forward. This was not a big deal for me since it is my first boat and was able to get used to it this way. If you have any other specific questions about transmission used, or other details, please ask, and ill try to provide what info/pictures I can.

My 323 has a Westerbeke 3B Three. It is a fairly tight fit - the gymnastics required for servicing the raw water impeller have to be seen to be believed - but it seems to be a good, solid powerplant.

As a rule of thumb for adequate power in tides or currents I would go with 2 HP/1000 lbs. of boat or about 25 Hp diesel for the 323. The MD11 I think is 18 peak HP. If you don't have any tide or current issues 1.5 HP per 1000 lb should be OK. just my 0.02.

I know this post is super old but I have a question I really really need answered, I just bought an 80 323 and it has a Universal m25xp, same as yours there, but my bed does not appear to be modified at all....should I be alarmed? Is my shaft angle too steep?
