Paragon Transmission replacement

I have an Allied Mistress with a Westerbeke 107 with an old Paragon transmission that is leaking fluid badly. I am going to have it either rebuilt or replaced, But I have questions.

1. Does anyone know what model paragon was used on the these boats?
(I cannot find the ID Plate)
2. Is it a good Idea to have it rebuilt or replace it with a new transmission
3. Does anyone know of a replacement that I can Install and align without having to modify my engine mounts or shaft ?

Thanks
Mike Heath

Re: Paragon Transmission replacement

Hi,My paragon box started leaking bad to the point it lost propulsion, which when I pulled it turned out to be the front seal flogged out.Down here in NZ I was in the same position as you but with a bit of asking about soon found an old dude(even older than me) who stripped it,and replaced every thing that needed doing for$1400nz,which I thought was pretty good.Even better we now have a neutral which is a revelation after 20years!!Ours had no plate either and he told me the reduction was two and a half to one,not two to one.I then bought the right prop and lo and behold 7 knts cruise at 1700 revs.We put bigger diameter hoses on as instructed, and intend to drain the whole box , not just the reduction part from now on!!He said they are are a great box,and if you can get the parts and some wise old sage, stick with it and save the hassle and expense of a new one.Dave.

Re: Paragon Transmission replacement

Also you will find the manual for these on the internet. As far as I know the more modern ones (30 ish) were the same box with different reductions bolted to the back. Some place in USA still has the bits. These were very common in nz and we're even a selling point at one time .Hope this helps Dave.
