Ontario32 Repower
We have a 1981 Ontario32 which still has the original Yanmar 2QM15 engine. At 10,000lbs, it's grossly under powered by today's standards. We've seen boats out there (but haven't been able to contact anyone who has done it) that have been re-powered with engines such as the 20hp & 25hp BetaMarines and 30hp and even a 36hp Yanmars. We're leaning towards the 30hp BetaMarine with a folding prop. Is there anyone out there who has gone through the re-powering experience with an Ontario32? We'd like to know more to help us decide how to proceed with ours. We only want to do this once.

Not an Ontario 32, but we just repowered our Cooper Banner 37 with a Beta 30 + Seaprop 60. Love the Beta, in part because Beta offers drop in solutions for cross make replacement. Also the engine is quite customizable vis-a-vis locations for the water pump">raw water pump, dip stick and more. Very quiet compared to our old Volvo MD11.
You might also try contacting Gartside Marine in Sidney, BC. He has done a fair number of conversions.

We have hull #55 from 1977. We are still running the 2QM20 engine. Although it was rebuilt from the crank up(2003) we know its not forever. As far as power/performance, the engine moves us at 6 knots @1800 rpm. We would be interested in how you move forward with changeout.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Our 2QM15 will push our boat along at 6 knots in flat water. It's a bit of a shame really, because there's nothing really wrong with the motor and it's only got about 3000 hours on it. (The boat we have wasn't sailed much at all in all its life, it was mostly used as a floating cottage). Into a breeze with a bit of chop, at times it's tough to make more than 2.5 knots. It's a bit of a safety issue as far as I am concerned. Happy to keep you posted. We'll post what we end up doing in the thread.

FYI a friend of ours has another Ontario32 and he had the same engine as yours. He did wear it down running up and down to the Bahamas and beyond for 10 years annually. But, he changed out his prop to a Campbell Sailor model and it made a big difference in overall performance. He kept it for his repower (Yanmar3gm). North by West are the designers in Vancouver of the propellor.

Might a controllable pitch prop along with an exhaust temp meter work? The question of assessing the viability of such isn't in my toolbox, but perhaps someone else can comment. Since if it would work, I'd think that it would be a lot cheaper than repowering.
I know that there's a tiny mention on such setups in the Dashew's Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, vol. II Including a bit on the subject when they describe the boat Mistral.

Contollable pitch prop usually means a re-shafting as the control rod for the prop runs through it. A re-fit for that may involve considerable infrastructure changes. We should ALL have Dashew's resources.

Update: We ended up going with a Nanni 30 with a Campbell Sailor prop. We’re now 3 years into the reporter and couldn’t be happier. We got a great deal from East Coast Power Systems on the engine and ended up going with an Electromaxx high power alternator to boot. 30hp gives us lots of thrust and has let up push upwind into 30knot winds with 6ft waves, something we couldn’t have managed with the previous engine. Not that you go out of your way to do that, but the weather can turn quickly here on the east coast in the summer. The repower required us to raise the engine mounts about 2 inches, and we had to upgrade the size of the raw water intake, but other than that, it was an easy replacement. Highly recommend this upgrade for anyone with an Ontario32 that needs a repower.
