Old motor never used

I was offered a showroom 9.9 Honda 2006. Still negotiating price but am wondering if a motor suits that long if there is any real downside?

Also should I expect blue book price or pay a lot more since warranty will start when I register.

Opinions. Thanks.

Before leaping, check parts availability in the area you will be cruising.

Re: Old motor never used

There really isn't a downside that I can think of, but I don't believe it is actually a "showroom" model because that model has changed since 2006 - so it would not be representative of a new one.

It is more likely old stock that has been sitting around, although I cannot imagine why a dealer would have it.

Make sure it isn't a rebuild or taken on trade or returned because of warranty issues or any other reason for it not to be new stock that was forgotten in a corner by mistake.

I would expect a whopping deal on it. I would consider it "used and in good shape" when it came to pricing.

Get a carb rebuild kit, plugs and an impeller at the same time and you won't need to worry about parts availability.

I've bought a motor that was 3 years in stock, no problems, but that is right much less than what you are looking at.

Re: Old motor never used

Just make sure its running first.

Before running. Turn it over (slowly) several times with the spark plug lead removed. This will start to lube up the moving parts.

Re: Old motor never used

Thanks all for that advice.! Right. If it runs well after checking out I'll need a VERY good deal. The NADA on it is 1390.00 retail.

Do you want it to power your Searunner and/or a dink. Does the Searunner require a long shaft? Either way, you might want to consider the weight difference between a 9.9 hp and a 15.
For weight comparisons, here is a chart.

I had to think about it. It couldn't be that many years ago. I bought a 15hp long foot circa 04. I believe it was basically the same engine. Sweet quiet engine and if memory serves me it was more than $3500.

If you buy it ask the dealer to put a new impeller in it as part of the deal. They dry out and get brittle.

Yeah for my 31 Searunner. My friend has a 31 also and put a 20 on it. Granted his is a lot heavier than mine but he told me the 20 didn't make much difference in speed but helped when he needed thrust.

I'm not motoring in any kind of chop anyway so the 9.9 is fine I think.

Re: Old motor never used

The book on it from NADAGUIDE is 1300 retail. I may give him a couple hundred for the warranty but that's all.

I'll also all for an impeller and a test start as advised.

Going to decide today. He may not go for it but I don't care. I'd rather just buy new than have a headache. My present motor is a 1985. Runs well when it runs!

Re: Old motor never used

Ask him why he still has it. It is odd for a dealer to have a 10yr old model lying around unsold. Usually, they would have fire-saled it long ago.

Re: Old motor never used

So as it turned out he wanted 3800.00 for it. I can get a new Yamaha controls included for just a bit more. Lots of big money on Nantucket. I guess he feels he will get his price.

I'll keep looking for a deal. Thanks.

Re: Old motor never used

$3800 for a 2006 9.9hp???!!!!!!

Defender sells the current 2015 model for $2600, and you can probably find it even cheaper.

I don't know where you are shopping, but you should look around. Your location says CT - have you looked at Defender?
