Old diesel

I have a can if diesel that’s been sitting around for 4 years. Someone suggested I add about a quart of it every time I fill my tank; the ligic being it won’t do any harm and I won’t have to find a place that will dispose of it for me (the marina won’t). Thoughts?

Re: Old diesel

I would put some in a glass jar first and see how much junk is in it. or filter it with cloth before putting it in your tank. I bought a boat with diesel that had sat that long in the tanks and used it with a good filter.

Re: Old diesel

Adding a proper fuel conditioner will make it perform normally and help any Racor type filter to remove the water. My current boat sat 6 years with some fuel in it. With a 3x conditioner and about 10% new fuel, I burned it up during the sea trial with no problems. On ships and commercial boats it's common practice to filter old motor oil and add it to the diesel tank.
