Re: oil empty after 30 hours !!!

Check it for leaks. If it's real dirty, clean it up first. Then run it, a leak that bad should be obvious.

Re: oil empty after 30 hours !!!

Was the oil filler cap on tight and the dipstick in the hole all the way? Valve cover gasket leaking? With that big of a leak I think you will probably be able to see it pretty quickly if you refill with oil and run the engine while watching. You can put some clean oil absorbent pads under the engine to more easily see where drips are coming down.

Re: Oil Empty After Thirty Hours !

I doubt that much oil went out the dipstick if it was in the hole. You must have a leak somewhere that it is pretty significant. I'm assuming you don't think you are burning a lot of oil or else you would have a big cloud of black smoke coming out with the exhaust.

Re: Oil Empty After Thirty Hours !

I'm not familiar with the 2GM, but I had (my brother owns it now) a 3GM and it lost most of the oil while just running it in the slip for twenty minutes a few weeks ago. Turns out that there is a small external steel oil line that goes from the starboard side of the engine around the back and terminates under the starter on the port side. There are four banjo fittings on it and a crack developed near the fitting at the back of the engine. The new replacement line looks like it's now copper or bronze. If the 2GM has a similar external pressure line I would check it after filling the engine with oil. It was immediately obvious where the oil was leaking when I started the engine. Not easy to replace, two people were necessary unless you have full access to the starboard side of the engine.

Re: Oil Empty After Thirty Hours !

Look for leaks underneath in the oil pan cover and gasket area too. Check the side of the engine for oil too up high. A blown head gasket could be leaking oil outside the engine. Guess how I know.

Re: Oil Empty After Thirty Hours !

my perkins discharged all its oil in only a few hours of motoring, but was repaired while under way so it cannot be too bad a problem except that it is there....tighten bolts, fix hoseclamps and good luck.

Clean the engine, dust with talcum powder. You'll find the leak.
