Oil Change thru dipstick Yanmar 4JH5E

I just did my first oil change on my new 4JH5E engine. I bought a vacuum based oil change pump from West Marine. The dipstick tube has a double bend as a result I was only able to get 4 out of 5.5 qts out. This is really disappointing since I am sure the last qt and a half are the dirtiest. Any ideas? Other than find a more flexible extraction tube?

Did your pump come with different size tubes? If so go to a smaller one that will go all the way in.

Unfortunately the unit came with 2 tunes and I am already using the one with the smallest diameter. The curve in the dipstick tube is pretty severe and the diameter 7/32" is not really the problem it's the stiffness.

Have you tried trying to suck out the oil with the refill cap and oil filter off? You may find this helps the flow.

Do you have a drain plug in the oil pan? To remove all oil, I first pump out what I can into a container. Then, I open the drain plug and let the rest drain onto an absorbent pad. Also, if you engine is mounted at an angle, you could put the tube into the drain plug at the high end. Be careful not to over tighten the drain plug as the pan is most likely aluminum.

Else, your only other option would be to rig a smaller tube onto the pump ~ somehow

I threw the tube away and connected directly to the top of the dip stick tube with a short piece of rubber hose.
Warm up your engine first, it makes it a little easier and faster.

I also drain the oil out of my yanmar with a hose that fits over the dipstick tube. The dipstick tube on my engine goes to the bottom of the sump, it should be the same on yours.

I also found that taking the cap off the oil fill and making sure the engine was nice and warmed up made a big difference.

But to the original question, not getting a quart of oil out that hasn't been in the engine way beyond its change by date should not made much difference to the engine assuming the filter is also replaced each time.

You asked for any ideas. I can't stand that last bit of oil in there either. So I drilled and tapped my oil pan on my Yanmar. I have a little portable container with an electric pump on it .Sucks it all right out in a matter of seconds. You can buy all your own parts and put it together and make your own.

Another vote for just taping the large hose of the vacuum oil changer to the top of the dipstick tube. Fast and neat. I just wrap the joint between hose and dipstick top with a bit of duct tape.

I get a bit over 4 quarts out too.The 5.5 quarts is "total" including what's left in the oil filter, oil cooler and channels (about 0.5 quarts). It also assumes the oil was to the "full" mark on the dipstick before draining (1.2 quarts between empty and full). And finally, if your engine is tilted (raked) it reduces capacity 0.5 quarts. See manual.

My yanmar came with its own oil pump, which the supplied hose slips right over the dipstick tube, which also is at the very bottom of the pan.

And the pump is bidirectional so you could pump oil back in if you like.

If your dipstick tube is attached to the sump with a banjo union and bolt, you can remove the bolt, drill it through, braze a barb on and then connect a permanent tube for an oil change pump. I have an old brass galley pump permanently mounted.

That's a mighty big pump. What does it take about three revolutions of that and the oil pan is empty?

About 1 minute of pumping and you can hear it sucking air at the banjo fitting. It's basically a cheap hydraulic motor with a handle on the drive shaft.

Yes, but Del, your engine is so pretty that even girls like it. And now that the Duck is in Alameda I am not surprised that the pump is bi- directional. ROTFLMAO

Thanks everyone sounds like the best idea is to find a hose that will fit over the dipstick tube instead of trying to push a small one through to the bottom of the sump. I am not too worried about the quart or so of oil that was left this time since the engine has only run 50 hrs total. But I would like to get closer to pulling all of the old oil out as the engine gets older and more sediment is created.
