We have purchased a couple of 6 litre vacuum oil extractor pumps over the years (one was left on the previous boat) so I have no personal experience with the electric ones, but I can’t see any reason one would not work.
On this boat, I have always used the vacuum ones, currently Pela. Drawbacks are storage space (and it's messy storage), and you can't fill with them. Maybe I should try an electric one.

Or what if I cut a hole in my generator platform? Hmmm. Then I could stick a hose through there, and attach a funnel.

But then I still need to get the fresh oil out of the 20 liter can, which is messy (no matter how hard I try, I alway spill something

Damn, there's got to be a better way.

Re: Oil Change Protocol

Simple 5 minute drop and fill on the genset
Have a hose off of this into container

https://www.ezoil.com.au/

Remote filter was a monumental fail, never could get a good seal between filter and housing and never could figure out why.
Start Genset, pump a few litres onto floor.
Bloodletting with filter in original position is far easier

20 into 5l
5l into Genset is how I do it

Have tried several of those pumps shown earlier, none can suck cold oil, cold being 30c

Re: Oil Change Protocol

I buy oil in gallon jugs even though 2.5 gallon jugs or 5 gallon pails would make sense (takes me 3.5 gallons to change everything and I keep 5 or so gallons on board all the time).

The gallon jugs are just easier to store securely and much easier to get the oil out of. Anything bigger is pretty unweildy to pour from, as I have somewhat limited clearance above my engines and generator (unless I start pulling less accessible floor hatches).

The previously mentioned Reverso (or similar) system isn't a bad idea, and I keep considering something like that for draining my engines (instead of the suction pump).

This one will https://www.ebay.com/itm/Westward-21...0c8%7Ciid%3A1: It screws tightly to the 5gallon pails of oil. The down side is that it takes a lot of pumps to empty a pail. I use a Reverso to remove and fill during oil changes and the hand pump to service in between. I have one in each engine room and one in the generator room.

Ooh, I like that. I only need 6 or 7 liters of oil for my little 100hp Yanmar, so that shouldn't be a big deal. If I could get that to fit into the neck of the 20 liter plastic can it would be perfect.

I wonder if punching a hole in the top of a horizontal oil filter would allow it to drain?

Good thought but probably not as most ( AFAIK ) are fitted with an anti drainback valve which is why they dont drain.

It comes with several adapters to fit different sized spouts.

A remote kit has a piece that attaches where the existing filter is spun on that the two hoses are connected to and a remote filter mount. They are not difficult to install and do not alter the engine.
