OD gm20f yanmar air intake

Does anyone know the outside diameter of the air intake throat? I would like to bring K and N
down with me. The old air filters need replacement.

I'm contemplating the same for my 4-JHE. I don't know the diameter, but it's small, which pretty much relegates you to tiny little cone filters.
I believe I am going to have to make an adapter sleeve to increase the diameter so that I can find a bigger as in 6" or so filter.
If you find a bigger filter with the small hole, I'd appreciate you letting me know the source.

I also have a lot of intake "honk" with my engine, I believe in my case putting the intake in the Lazarette will significantly lower the noise inside of the boat.

It looks like the air filter is interchangeable as far as ordering so it all should be universal, hopefully. The original filter is really cheaply made and the foam in both mine are disintegrated. Plus, the part goes for probably almost $70 after shipping.
K and N can make all kinds of custom shapes, sizes, styles (check out website) but I am on my way to Sea-tac and thought I could pick something up since I don't have time.

I finally found the service manual picture and the air cleaner mount looks like a paint can sawn off at 1/2" height and the filter and top/side clip on. The mount looks like there are two screws holding it on to the side of the block so my idea will not work.

Everybody says the original foam filter is no good. My possible fixes now are to get some accurate measurements. I may find an aftermarket that will work in the original housing or it looks easy to fab some kind of adapter. Compared to nothing, I am thinking I could make something from a regular auto air filter and the blown out original filters. I think that if I am needing to clean the dirt off my deck from land, a functioning air filter is a good idea.

Mine is like you describe, but then the assembly slides over the intake and is clamped on with a hose clamp.
Mine also doesn't use foam, but a very fine nylon mesh, not as fine as panty hose though.
Foam like you describe can be bought for motorcycles or in a home improvement store meant for window unit air conditioners.

Yea, I don't know. Does it look like you could make a filter with the correct circumference work if you removed the assembly and clamped the filter on?

I found a guy on ebay that made an adapter to replace the standard filter housing to a larger coan filter. I'll post a photo when I get one.

I'm sure I can, and with that link you sent me, I feel sure I can order an off the shelf solution. I'll be at the boat this weekend and I'll try to take some photos,
but my 4-JHE is an old motor, it may not be applicable to newer motors.

I also want to try remote mounting the intake in the Lazarette as I'm sure a lot of my engine noise is from the intake and if I move that noise into the Lazarette, it may make the inside of the boat quieter when we are motoring, I actually hate motoring, it's so noisy.

Not sure if this helps but I have a Yanmar 2GM20F engine that had the same problem - old foam air filter that was self destructing. I removed the whole air filter housing, used the gasket for a template and got a mount fabricated - flat plate with tube welded on to which I fitted a K&N filter, the model was RU0400. According to my notes the filter was about 4inches long and 3inches outside diameter. That was about the longest one that I could fit in the space I had.
