I have had fuel consumption meters on three different planing boats, one gas Sportfisherman, one Diesel and a CC outboard.
I graphed fuel consumption on one side and speed in calm water on the other. In all three cases, the most fuel efficient was idle, the MPG curve went up from there, yes it did get real steep just before plane, but did not drop down once on plane, something I was sure it would do. I felt certain that I would find a fuel efficient spot just after she broke over on plane, but I didn’t.
It really is simply a matter of the slower you go, the further the range you will have.
Now wind and current may change that a little of course, if your into a three kt current but making four kts thru the water, your speed is only one kt, bump it to five kts and your speed through the water doubles.

Stick a five meter pole up. Cross it at the top with another five meter pole. You'll get 25 sqm of sail that will give you a lot of juice heading downwind.

With a decent tailwind you're getting 15-25hp for free.

edit, unless you click on the screen shot....you can't read it. In a nutshell, a 53 hat MY goes 9.5kts @ 10gph including generator.
