Maybe the wrong place but good for a laugh !
Hi Guys: You have all heard in my posts that I am out in the middle of no where..hard core NO where. Bobconnie in particular says he has been and worked in these conditions for years, now I do not doubt the man in the least, but today was a classic and I just happened to have my camera when I had to stop by my local "machine shop" where I am rebuilding a spare engine for my boat...the venerable blue beast that can be seen in the photos, this is a copy of the one in my boat with over 32,000 hours on it. Now Bobconnie, was it really like this where you were ? and how many years ago was that, this video was shot today in 2015..... This is NORMAL, the stuff I see going on here daily would blow your mind. Needless to say, you can now well imagine my desperation was real when I was appealing for help on these forums ! https://www.dropbox.com/s/b8ets1durs...F8540.AVI?dl=0 Here are some photos of the shop as well... Kind of reminds me of my motorcycle mechanic's shop in Saigon (when it was Saigon) only your shop has a lot more tools and some are even electric powered.

Re: Maybe the wrong place but good for a laugh !
Hello John: The Honda shops have changed, well most, a lot have lifts now. Quite a number have tools, now a Honda is one thing as you can still buy a good second hand one for $400..How about the diesel engine your business is dependent on ? I am happy to let them hack away at my honda....my boat engines ? I hope you got a giggle and maybe a memory.

You bet I did. Nostalgic. I had a Honda 90 there and most all civilians were riding 50s. I don't know how many times the kids redid the engine on my 90 just to find out that it was an electrical problem. When you turned on the lights for night riding the engine would die. Electrical troubleshooting was not their forte.
Thanks for your post.

Great shop! The 3 mechanics look like slave labor for kiddies.

Hi Mark: Indeed the best shop on the island ! Did you see the video the kids are having a laugh and all three are at least 16-17 despite the one tiny kid looking like he is 12. Can you believe that is the best service I can get here no matter what I am willing to pay !

In pictures 5, 6 and 7, the face up head looks suspiciously like a 6-71 Detroit head. Are they using it as a grinding stone (mandrel?), presumably along with some kind of grinding compound, to resurface the head the little guy is riding? Or are they resurfacing the head on the ground? Either way, seems pretty ingenious.

Re: Maybe the wrong place but good for a laugh !
I do not know what the heads are from, both are from straight sixes or a v-12..in the video you can clearly see six exhaust ports in each head. The big head on the bottom, and it is big at about a meter long, is the grindstone. They do not use regular valve grinding compound, though you can buy that and there is some around...they burn something or other and use the ash from that along with some oil. Certainly ingenious, and it does work. But when it is your head taking that ride, and your boat simply must run, it is scary. Locally they do not bat an eye. As I said the process takes a few hours to a couple of days. Don`t forget it is 100* here as well. I have done it, and cannot imagine how they work on the ground, even when I was young and flexible it hurt no as I am older it is downright painful.

Yes, but take heart, flat is flat, and your engine doesn't know if that flatness was achieved by a 5 axis cnc machine in a climate-controlled shop or a 3 axis bio-morphic machine on the floor of the Sumatran jungle...As you imply though, one makes do with what's available.
