Yes, our prop-shaft broke.
Probably due to wear in the bearings that hold it in place, or just accumulated fatigue. The prop-shaft is 14' long and has been in constant use for the last 10 years; Equivalent miles to a circumnavigation.

I looked at replacing it with hydraulic or electric drives, and also the possibility of replacing the whole thing with outboards, but I think I have decided to just replace the longtail drive with some improvements to make it work a bit better.

Traditional longtails have dry exhaust which is hot and very noisy. Your engine could be enclosed in a sound dampening cover but you would want to include connections for wet exhaust and raw water cooling.
