Laser cleaning on engines

Anyone on the forum ever used a Laser cleaner on their engine to get rid of heavy corrosion? A contractor here in Langkawi just bought one of these machines to clean rust off two engines that had been submerged and I gotta say, I’m impressed. What would once have been hours of tedious degreasing and power brushing by an enthusiastic mechanic has been reduced to about ½ an hour of laser work by an unskilled operator. One engine is beyond repair but the other one is looking like new after a strip down and a coat of red oxide primer. On machined surfaces it etches the metal so I’d be wary of using it anywhere other than the rough cast exterior and not on the higher power settings……we are just learning about how far to go with the power settings and usage technique. These machines are probably popular in the US but here in Malaysia this is a real advance and a welcome departure from abrasive blasting and mechanical cleaning.

Say whuut? This sounds too good to be true - do you have better term/s to google besides "engine laser cleaner"? A name? A picture?

Never heard of it but google turned up - Laser rust removal, a type of laser cleaning, is an effective process for cleaning up metal parts. Using a fiber laser cleaning system, rust and other contaminants can be quickly and completely removed without damaging the metal underneath.

Re: Laser cleaning on engines

I’ll post some pics of the actual machine we’re using when I get to the workshop later today but PippaB’s link shows more or less the finish we obtained. Narrow beam is better and a lower power setting suits best what we need to clean. One of the guys just did a rust removal job on a Perkins M65 engine block where the water pump">raw water pump had been leaking and it cleaned up really well…. The rust was heavy and covered half of one side of the engine block. The downside is that the machine is really only for workshop use, it would be very difficult to get it to a docked boat unless it was to do an extensive clean and repaint on perhaps a superyacht engine/engines……the machine is watercooled and uses 3 phase power.

Here’s a photo of part of the Laser machine. The Perkins had severe corrosion and the wastage is visible on the webs, engine mount and bolt head, after the laser clean and the paint, that metal was spotlessly clean.
