Theyíre actually a pretty reliable gearbox but they just have a few individual quirks (like the damned flange nut) that need more attention than other Hurth based gearboxes.

Re: Kanzaki trans for 3qm30 Yanmar 1978

Wow thanks everyone, lots of good discussion. Helps me out.
I agree was surprised he was told his nut needed to be replaced. Donít think he questioned it too much until he couldnít find one. Thatís a nice grind job to make the tool Pete. Heís got a sailboat but not deep pockets, kinda like the rest of us. Looks like I have to figure a locking tool too so as not to be hitting against the gears.

At least I know whatís supposed to happen here now and can look to see if I can come up with a way to get it on there. Iíll show him the link for a new bolt he wasnít able to find that.
Thanks again everyone you guys rock!

You need to stake it.

Nonetheless, certainly seems excessive to me, especially for a splined-flange retaining nut.

FWIW, the 2QM20 Kanzaki transmission (KBW-10) uses the same special tool does the 3QM30 KH-18 transmission and the torque figure as per the manual is 9.5 kg m (68.7 ft lbs) so something seems to be incorrect somewhere

More manual discrepancies.

The output shaft coupling removal tool has a different part number (177090-09100) but sure looks the same as the installation tool; after all, it is the same nut.

I wonder which one is the right one.

Well, there we have it. It's either a term error; should be newton meters, not kg m, 100 nm = 74 ft lb. Or an added-number error, 10 kg m = 72.3 ft lb.

According to this page, 177099-09010 is the correct p/n for the slugging wrench.

^^ Yep JimB, I think you are on the money

That torque plus staking should do it!

Thanks for that explanation. I used a chisel. I see this looks like the correct way

Re: Kanzaki trans for 3qm30 Yanmar 1978

We have not been able to locate a new nut for this transmission. Iím told the mechanic said the nut was bad, couldnít be tightened enough. Iím thinking it jumped a thread when he tried to torque it. Owner says heís had nut off since an noticed no problem with the treads themselves.

Anyone know where to get a new one? Or has anyone found a link?

Can't help directly but there has to be a lot of these transmissions not in use and being wrecked. Try asking on craigslist or whatever you have in your part of the world.

You can make a nut yourself - it is a standard metric thread. Cut / machine an off-the-shelf high grade nut to the right dimensions using the old nut as a guide. Without seeing it up close, I think a normal hex head will suffice.

Re: Kanzaki trans for 3qm30 Yanmar 1978

You should measure both nut and the shaft to determine if one or the other is indeed out of spec; the one in the picture certainly doesn't look bad, but pictures can be deceiving.

If the shaft thread is good and there's room I was going to suggest exactly what Wot suggests, just for general purposes -- and to get rid of the bastard-sized nut.
