Kanzaki KH3-P Rebuilds

I have a Tashiba-31 built in 1986. I purchased the boat in 2016. According to the survey, the previous owner had the gearbox rebuilt in 2015. I put 10 hours on the engine in 2016, then she went onto the yard for maintenance. In the fall of 2017 I had her back in the water. The second time I took her out the gearbox started slipping after the first hour. By the time I got back to the dock it was almost impossible to get it back in gear. My mechanic looked it over and said I needed a rebuild due to cone glazing. I sent out for a rebuild and now have it back. In the course of reinstalling the transmission, my mechanic found he could not fully adjust the cable. Investigation revealed that the cable was binding against the compass housing. I had to raise the housing up 1/2 inch in order to have complete movement of the cable.

In the time that I have had the boat, I've always been gentle with shifting - always doing so at low RPM with a good pause between forward and reverse. One cable controls both RPM and Fwd/Reverse.

So, my question - did the cable problem contribute to the transmission failing so soon after the first rebuild? Or should I be looking elsewhere for a problem?

If the cable didn't allow the clutch cone to fully engage, it could have caused slippage an the cone to glaze.
