Is this an engine kill switch? And....

Noticed this today on the starboard side of my engine hatch.

Me thinks it is an engine kill switch?

It looks just like the one in the picture.

I'm guessing it is for:
1) Safety if you are working next to the engine?
2) To cut off the engine in case the key does not work?

There is no wiring attached to it (and thus my questions).

I am not certain, but it looks a lot like our remote starter switch.

I vote for the remote starter switch. It's a good place if you're jogging the engine for some reason, like adjusting valves.

Yep, remote starter switch but clearly doesn't do anything if there are no wires attached.
So you get to make it do whatever you want it to do

Again, wiring up as a remote starter switch is an excellent idea IMO

It wouldn't have been a remote shut off switch, because the MD7 engine never had an electric stop function.......

It may depend on what type of switch it is. If it is a simple on/off switch it would be a very poor choice for a remote starter switch. If it is a temporary switch then it might have been used for a remote start.

Wiring up the push button as an remote / emergency start is an excellent use of the switch.

Wire the switch directly between the battery stud on the starter motor and the ignition key terminal on the starter solenoid. This will bypass the existing key switch, wiring harness, and neutral safety switches, and ensure you have an alternate way of starting the engine in case of failure of any of the above items.

I recommend adding a protective surge suppressor diode at the engine alternator, just in case someone accidentally starts the engine with alternator output disconnected by the battery switch. "Zap Stopper" is one brand name of suppressor.

Also, consider the position of the transmission shift lever before starting
the engine with the key bypass button. If the engine is in gear, the boat may move in an unexpected and undesirable direction!

Relocate the button to a not so obvious position inside the engine compartment to keep it away from children and other unauthorized persons.

i just bought a similar cole-hersee "momentary" switch to accessorize their battery isolator. it temporarily combines the starter and house battery banks if you need the extra juice.

don't think its a kill switch either remote starter of glow plug its a momentary switch right?

If it is switch pictured in the OP, then yes, it is monentary "on" switch. Good for 35 amps at 12 volts.

It's just to bump the engine around, not start it necessarily.For finding top dead center. Or adjusting valves. It's there (or was),so one person could manipulate the engine without having to shout out things like, "hit again .JUST A LITTLE,GOD DAMMIT! Once more. ..again, etc. A convenience, like.

The engine has a compression release, but it is activated by a mechanical lever on the valve cover.......
