Take a look at the Tiny Tach Welcome To Tiny-Tach. Small and economical tachometers for gas and diesel engines. It does not run off the alternator, rather senses pulsations in the injector lines. Works for me.

Tiny Tach looks interesting. I'll have to check when I get back to the boat to see if I can run a new cable to both hulls.

A repair shop in Greensboro, NC will fix your Volvo Penta tachometer/ hour LCD meter professionally for a very reasonable price. The alternative is a european shop at very high prices. I thought it was not possible but they have the expertise and lcd that fits. The original hours were retained. In worse case LCD issues, they can use your second good tack to revive another.
