Installing Temperature Gauge for Yanmar 4JH4E

I have a Yanmar 4JH4E engine in my boat. It has a buzzer that tells me when the engine is too hot. I would like to install a temperature gauge does anyone know if I have to use a Yanmar gauge or can I install an after market gauge.

Install any gauge you want, you'll have to buy the sender to match the gauge so the gauge will read properly. The current setup is only a temperature switch (on-off) the temp sender will be a variable resistance based on temperature.

As Sailmonkey says, sender & gauge are a matched set.

I was under the impression that gauge manufacturers had a united standard???

Tried to replace a water temp gauge lately?? VDO alone has about 3-4 different senders.....all with a different range and direction of resistance changes.

Isn't that what the chart above states?

Charlie,
Save yourself the potential of buying a mismatched gauge and sender and buy them as a set if possible. If not, the manufacturer can tell you if the sender and gauge are compatible with each other and with your engine.

Thanks for all the help. I recvd a call from the company that Del bought the parts from for his Yanmar and they explained to me that there are two different locations to place a sender so that you can keep the alarm and also have a gauge. He spent about five minutes on the phone with me and recommended I by an aftermarket unit. I was ready to buy from him and he said that they didn't deal in aftermarket supplies. Pretty impressed that they would take the time to answer a question and steer me away from buying the $1000 Yanmar panel.
