Installing an oil change pump

Hello,

I was thinking of installing a permanent oil change pump on my Universal 5424 (Kubota 3 cylinder).

I was wondering if anyone has installed one on an engine of similar size. What pump did you use and did it work OK? Anything I should watch for?

How did you hook it up to the sump?

I would like a reversible one (to fill the engine as well as drain) because access to the top of the engine is restricted.

Until last year, oil changing was a nightmare. I installed a remote filter kit, which really helps, but a pump would make for really straightforward changes.

I haven't done it yet - I need to get the new engine working first. I bought an HF portable 12VDC vane pump a few years back for the purpose. They seem to have replaced it with an impeller pump, which would not be appropriate for oil transfer, so I don't have a recommended source now. But I do recommend finding a vane pump, as the impellers don't tend to last with petroleum. I have been using a vane pump to transfer diesel from the keel tank to the day tank for 20 years with no problems.

I purchased a 12v dc electrical Yae Tek diesel oil extractor pump a few years back. It cost less than $40 it is really easy to use quick clean and fast.
I just attach one power clip to the hot starter lead and ground the other so electrical connection is convenient. Just did an oil change last week

The previous owner of my Tartan 33 installed a reversible oil change pump. It works really well with the Universal 5424. I've never paid attention to the type of pump he used, but I'll be on the boat in a week or so and can take pics of everything.

I want to do this as well. Whatever made Yanmar think a sideways oil filter would make for a clean change?? What a mess when removing, yuck!!

For the sideways filter, try putting a plastic bag around it so the oil goes into the bag. It's easier if you slightly loosen the filter first.

Some electric types used by com. fishermen.
Prices in $Cdn-these pumps are available at US chandlers.

The slick way is if your engine has a drain plug-you plumb the pump right to the plug using a safety shut off valve.
Otherwise,you use the dipstick hole extraction method.

I use a Reverso gear pump with great success. Plumbed into the drain, have a safety shut off valve, and a pipe cap at the end of the hose. Permanently mounted on the bulkhead. Makes oil changes quick, easy and no mess. Pump reverses for filling. A bit pricey, but going on 7 years and no issues.

The reason I ask, is it COMPLETLY changed my view of changing oil. Its simple, clean and easy.. No wires, no extra pipes, no nothing. However, I do have a separate oil drain pipe on my MD2030s.

I have a 4qt version. It works great - better than other manual solutions. But it is bulky, and needs to be kept upright when not use or it can leak residual oil. If an electric version can do the job it is preferable IMHO.

Edit: The tubes used to draw out the oil are a mess to deal with. Unless flushed out with gas or kero there is enough residual after draining that some oil will drain out over time. A permanent solution would be much tidier and easier.

Beta puts a manual oil change pump on all of their engines. Mine hasn't given me one problem. Pumps the oil out in about a minute and has required zero maintenance in 18 years.

Their engine are Kubota based to, maybe there is some interchangeability.

I have a forget the name, but they don't make it any longer, for draining only. It is attached to the oil sump drain hose on my Westerbeke, oil change in 10 minutes. My concern about a reverse pump is drain oil left in the line that is pumped back into the engine. Pumps are the way to go.
