Inside bellhousing after starter removal

Fresh off the hard and the solenoid crapped out. Perkins 4-108 with infamous OEM starter, on a 40' 1984 DuFour GibSea.

Starter, especially bendix gear super corroded. Peered inside, and what you see is what I saw. Should I have concern about the flywheel, etc.?

Also, in the likely event this starter cannot be resurrected, what are some drop-in replacement options? I've searched and searched and came up with little more than other people experiencing the same thing.

Any insight, wisdom or opinion genuinely appreciated.

Oh, and there was no 3/4" flange that I've come to understand should have existed.

I'm an idiot. The flange came off with the starter. Better eyes when off the boat, I suppose.

is that a "Lord of darkness" = Lucas 13 tooth starter, or the 12 tooth Delco?

Oh, God... what is the "Lord of Darkness"!? Because I just counted, and it's 13.

I don't see a problem with that ring gear. The teeth seem to be complete and not showing any abnormal or excessive wear. That's not to say that there isn't a problem elsewhere. Try to turn the motor over using some vicegrips at the front or some other way, just to check the rest. If they all look like this, then it's no problem. The engine hasn't been cranked over for a while and so you start to get a little corrosion here and there. The bolt holes seem OK.

I found ebay to be a good source for starters. There's almost always someone selling used 4108 parts and new starters. Much less than OEM and probably made in the same factory.
The rust on the flywheel is common. Not much to do about it unless you want to pull it. Even then the starter gear will knock paint or lube off. And there's always some corrosion inside the bellhousing. That's why they're thick.

The pic does not look bad...some superficial corrossion...thats normal.

Correction....I zoomed in...some pitting on the housing and significant corrossion build up on gear teeth. That bolt hole to the right looks damaged.

You might try to clean up that wheel thru the starter opening and see if there is pitting in the teeth. Rotate it and inspect all the teeth.

Re: Inside bellhousing after starter removal

I had to bring my starter from a Perkins 4-236 to a starter rebuilder. Much more cost effective than trying to buy a hard to find starter. The centering ring usually comes off with the starter. Hang on to it, because they are specific to your engine and a new one won't be supplied with your new starter. The elongated bolt pattern on the right side makes me suspicious that you might be missing the centering ring.

Check online with Transatlantic Diesel. They have a good selection of Perkins parts at reasonable prices.

I think that you are seeing the shadow of the flash, based on other indications.

Love this. I drove a Rover four-door car in the 80s, as well as a Triumph.

Best I can be see the flywheel looks OK. Rotate the engine and make sure no teeth are damaged. Is it a Bendix or solenoid engaged?

If it's Lucas it should be replaced. Electrical products made by lucas earned a terrible reputation for unreliability and substandard performance. Those of us who raced English motorcycles quickly learned to replace points, condensers, diodes, and large capacitors and gain improved performance and reliability.

Those of us that flew British built aircraft had the same experience with Lucas electronics.
