Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

I just pulled my yanmar out today. Giving it a good scrub then in parts in a few days. Low compression, water in oil. Black exhaust. Hopefully it can be saved.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

I inherited a Yanmar 2GM when I bought my boat. It didn't look great but I was able to get it running. Had to pull it because of another issue I was fixing (replacing fuel tank) and decided I was going to do a few things to the engine. As I took hoses and small pieces off, I realized the engine was in need of a lot more work so I took it apart and did a bit of a rebuild myself. $1200 in parts and things are coming back together. The only way to describe its use by the past owners was Neglect. Engine only had around 730 hours and needed an overhaul.

Issues I found were built up rust/carbon at the exhaust mixer, carbon clogging the exhaust valves, crack in one piston (replaced both), oil soaked air filter (previous valve cover gasket failure I fixed), Lots of rust, cooling passages blocked with salt/debris, replaced fuel/oil lines, replaced fuel pump... Just all around mess. Seeing all that I found, I'm actually surprised it was still working.

Like I said, it's coming back together. I'm excited to see how it runs after the work I've been doing to it. Attached pictures show some of the problem areas.

I can't believe the damage & how people can not do the basics of care. Even if they just care about $$ & not the boat. Sad to see.

Just thought I'd post an updated picture. Got my 2GM cleaned up and just about ready to go.

maintained or not, the GM series is liable to have some of those issues. Of two I had, one went 500 hours and one went less than 2300 hours.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

matching the orange with the fuel filter was completely unintentional. Didn't realize it until someone I work with pointed it out.

Test day today too.
