Hurth HBW-150 V-Drive Problem

I have a Hurth V-Drive powered by a Perkins 4-108 from 1983. Last spring I lost forward gear while underway in Mexico. I had a mechanical guy remove the tranny, disassemble and replace one worn thrust washer. All seemed fine until 72 engine hours later I now have the same symptom....prop turns in forward but increasing engine rpm doesn't increase prop speed. Reverse seems to be fine.
My question: I have the Hurth manual and parts list...can I open this tranny up myself and figure out what needs doing? I'm in a small town in Mexico with no bonafide transmission shop that I have any confidence in. A new tranny can be bought in the US but is expensive and difficult to get here...especially right now...
Also: After 72 hours...could this be a linkage problem...? Shift lever seems to be moving as it should.....

Check your manual for the instructions on how to adjust the shift lever cover. This is important and many mechanics overlook it. The adjustment can be performed on engine but it is a PIA to do it that way.

Re: Hurth HBW-150 V-Drive Problem

You can eliminate the shift lever as the cause of the loss of engagement by removing the cable and operating the lever manually.
The problem with doing the gearbox yourself is that there are a lot of press fit items on the main shaft that require the use of a big old bearing puller or a workshop press. If the forward clutch pack is worn out you can use the usually pristine reverse clutch pack in its place to get underway until the retail chain gets back to normal and you can get new parts.
