Question How do I reinstall the solenoid so that the hook grabs the lever in the starter?

Here is a photo of the hole that the solenoid mounts into, and the hook end of the solenoid's piston. I'm assuming the hook needs to grab the little crossbar on the lever so that it can engage the pinion gear, but I'm unsure of how I can make this happen when the bolts that mate the solenoid to the starter are fixed to the solenoid body and make it impossible to insert the solenoid in on an angle…

Sorry, I didn't realize I had to upload the photo somewhere else prior to adding to a post. Here it is.

The starter is a Nippondenso 028000-7461 and it's on a marinized Kubota Z600.

How did the solenoid come out? Is it possible to hook the bar with a tool and pull it outwards so you can then attach the solenoid? Can you insert it and rotate it to attach?

Re: How do I reinstall the solenoid so that the hook grabs the lever in the starter?

The surefire way is to remove the starter from the engine and slide the pinion gear to the "engaged" position so that what you're calling the "crossbar" moves towards the solenoid as far as it can. Then you can engage the solenoid's hook (possibly sliding the hook as far as possible out of the solenoid) and slide everything together.

There are various possible shortcuts to eliminate the need to unbolt the starter from the engine, like holding the "crossbar" in the engaged position with a screwdriver or a piece of wire or string. They don't always work.

I ended up doing just that, only to discover another question. Perhaps you can shed some light?
