Honda 10 HP outboards

My 27ft trimaran runs on Honda 10 HP outboard. The engine is relatively new and run problem free for some time. Now the engine starts easy and run for some minutes (say 4-10 min) and splutter (like running on one cylinder) for 10 sec and cut off.

Restart with one pull very easy and the symptom repeats itself again.

I have send to dealer which engine was caburettor clean, spark plugs changed. I have spare engine (same modle) so I swap gas pump, electronic control box but it still act the same.

If not running long distance then I can live with it but as an ex-car mechanic, I am curious to find out and solve the problem.

Thanks for all the help, I need it.

cchaiek.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

It could be overheating. There's a system to protect the motor if it gets too hot - it'll drop to idle, then if it keeps getting hot it will shut down.

It could be the impeller, or the thermostat, or even a faulty temperature sensor.

Or possibly, if the gearcase was recently off, the cooling water tube that runs from the pump to the powerhead may not have been correctly inserted into the pump.

Yes, unfortunately on these motors the tell tale is upstream of the thermostat, so doesn't give any indication of temperature.

How about the fuel tank vent?
Try pumping the fuel bulb when it first starts to miss, that can usually pretty much eliminate any fuel delivery issues, plus of course check that the bulb stays full and is never sucked flat.
An IR thermometer should be able to tell you if there is an overheat, maybe leave the cover off so you can take measurements when running.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

Thanks, a64pilot. We already change the whole fuel tank/line system.l
Have read and familia with 44crusingcat for nearly 10 years.

I shall send the engine to dealer again and ask them to check water cooling system and will update.

Honda motorcycle, 100-125 cc (one cylinder) runs for 100,000 Km without needing to change even fuel filter or clean carburettor or change spark plugs. The dealer is not so well train in my openion. One of the guy in the marina have dealer change carburettor. Same HP, outboard carburettor cost 3X of motorcycle!!!

I was auto mechanic in the 70s, of course with contact and carburettor.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

With the Hondas it's usually a carburetor problem. Cleaning rarely solves the problem & dealers normally won't even do it because it's actually cheaper to replace it than clean it & replacement always works. Replacing the main nozzle might work but at $130 I'd just get a new carb. Easy to replace yourself. Go to Boats.net for the part.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

If your hose has been layed up for a while it may have varnish in it and clogs up the jet on occasion. Happed to me when the carb was cleaned twice.
New gas. ?? Then I ran a wire down the hose and found gunk. Replaced hose and bulb.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

I have had multiple problems with My Honda 20's carb. They are very sensitive to idle speed, dirt, water, emotions, etc. I installed a bulkhead mounted 16oz filter which almost cured it but still found water somehow got past it and causes my emotional disturbance which further prevents any cooperation from it. Some models have an auto choke which doesn't turn off which sounds like your symptom. Quick sell it and buy a yamaha enduro 2 stroke from a 3rd world country. Your problems will be over.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

SteveSadler: I sail and live in third world. Have one Yammy 10 hp 2 stroke very old one and work perfect except noise of 2S is not pretty. Many times thinking about going back to 2S since Tri use little power.

Thanks for all the response. Shivring thinking about replace the whole carb. If engine is used less than 100 hrs and need new carb, better go back to 2Stroke.

Thanks for the like to boats.net but the part cagalog does not have whole carb, only parts.

Re: Honda 10 HP outboards

Just want to tks all the great help, 44 cruising cat was right. I do not use this Honda since last post since I have several engines. Where I sail is 35-45 C year round. I took the thermostate out (kind of white powder covered) and just this weekend, put back on boat and ran 3 hrs. without problem.
