Help Sorting out a Volvo Penta MD21a

Hey!

I've been following this forum for quite some time but this is surely my first or second post ever! Ive got a Volvo Penta Md21a which is sitting in the back of my van awaiting to be signed of and put into my diy project, a Hallberg Rassy 35 Rasmus.

Guys.... Whats the wiring procedure to try and start an inboard diesel engine?

So far ive figured to connect

battery + --> Starter engine
Battery - --> ground on the engine body

I did this and as i turned the ignition key etc i got life from the instruments. Seemed to be working. But when i turned to start. It only clicked and did nothing. It did not pull at all. why? worth to mention is that my 162ah battery was at 12.45amps. But it should still pull?

Any MD21a tips are really welcome.
Regards

First, don't waste your time trying to start without a fully charged battery.

Second, there should be a yellow and red striped wire connected to either a small spade or a small (#10 or so) screw terminal on the starter solenoid that activates the starter solenoid, which engages the starter drive and provides high amperage current to the starter motor.

As Jim says, you're wasting your time without a fully charged battery....

Also, the MD21 engine is a pre-combustion chamber (IDI) and has glow plugs fitted in the cylinder head. The start procedure is to turn the key to the "glow" position and allow the glow plugs to heat up before cranking the starter motor. The original panels had a large resistor behind the panel and a glow indicator which gave the operator an indication of glow plug temp. Check and see if you have that.....

You might already know this, but after turning the key right you have to push the key in then turn more to the right

Hi!

Thanks for the responses. they create some new questions for me.

How important is it that the glow plugs heat? I have no prior experience with this engine and can not be sure about the glowplugs condition. Is it possible to start without ? I have the original panel with the "yellow" light which is supposed to be glow plug indicator? Is this light supposed to shut of when they are hot enough or does it simply show that its heating?
