Help me find a manual fuel transfer pump for diesel...

Headed out and back through the Gulf of Maine in July where there is plenty of everything except wind so I will be taking some extra diesel fuel jugs.

I have never been able to find a quality portable manual pump that is suitable for both diesel and the marine environment and small enough to stow. I have one of those little crappy red ones from the auto store, but it is slow and makes a mess.

Any better experience with better pumps would be appreciated...

Re: Help me find a manual fuel transfer pump for diesel...

How about a 12 v diesel transfer pump. Most pump 10+ gallons a minute. Not real large in size. I think mine Is about 8x4 inches or so. Not counting the hoses. They run a little over $125, and usually can be had for much less. I would stay with a name brand one. Just for possible better quality. You could also use one of the rotary drum pumps. They can be found made out of various plastics, and stainless steel suction tube. Nice thing about that, is you do not have to worry about rust.

Hope that is of some help.

On Ebay search "12 volt transfer pump"

I have one of these. Fits in 55 gallon drum. 8 gallons/min. $16 inc. shipping. Second 2 pumps under $20 and under $30.

Just use a 12v auto fuel pump. Low cost and they work fine.

You could even use a drill-powered pump, really. I have a cross-transfer pump used in farming. Works fine. Looks like this:

Can't speak for the one negative review, but I like using these shaker hoses. Can get them lots of places. Not sure of the differences. Mine works well.

Look at this type on amazon . Its a long tube with a hand pump on top and a tube off of the top to go into the tank opening. You can leave the diesel can standing , pump the top and no fuss no muss. Simple even if the boat is bouncing around.

It sounds like a Black and Decker Jack Rabbit pump would work well for your application. You only turn the crank to get the flow started, then turn the handle backwards to open up the pump for siphon action. I assume you will be able to raise your diesel jugs above the fuel in your tanks? Small, light, not terribly expensive, mostly plastic so good for marine.

Thanks everyone. Some good choices here. I am l leaning toward the no-amp, salt resistant options....

ID:	150792 I use this to transfer from my reserve tank to my active tank. Works for jerry cans too. I think its made by jabsco. Takes about 200 pumps to empty a 20 litre can.

Re: Help me find a manual fuel transfer pump for diesel...

For transferring from jugs to the tank, the simplest, most reliable, most compact, and perhaps fastest (if you include set0up time) is the shaker siphon. I've tested numerous pumps, both on the boat an in industry, and this is the right answer for boat transfer of jerry jugs. About $12.

(And no, it isn't kerosene. It's gasoline, but I hate CARB jugs.)

Yup ... shaker siphon.

... AND a 2-inch long nylon or PVC pipe nipple sized to your deck fill (usually 1-1/2 NPT)

This helps keep water out of the tank by effectively raising the fill above the deck. Really important when adding fuel at sea.
