Help fo Bukh DV-10

Hi I purchased a 27' Grinde built in Denmark equipped with a Bukh DV-10 diesel. The previous owner had died unexpectedly and the boat sat unused for five years. I bought from the estate and they knew nothing about it other than it was taking up space in the driveway. My problem is that upon starting the engine, the oil is forced out around the filter. I have tried four different brands of filter but it almost seems like the pressure forces the oil through the gasket. There is no oil pressure gauge and I have to shut the engine down quickly so can't really trace the origin of the problem. Any thoughts or experience with this. Seems like a nice engine otherwise.

Check that a previous filter change didn't leave a gasket or part of a gasket stuck to the engine.

If the above is not the cause I'd look for gunk causing a blockage on the discharge side of the filter. Other than that, the "usual" cause of this problem is generally a stuck oil pressure relief valve - perhaps a gunked up spring.

Maybe a good engine flush with some diesel or overpriced specialty product is in order?

Any chance it has a spin on oil filter adapter? The gasket between the adapter and the base is leaking and not the filter seal itself.

Hi. Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Unfortunately, no adapter or leftover gasket. That would have made things too easy. The engine flush sounds enticing. A friend did that with a diesel that had sunk and it worked great. However, he is deceased now so I can't ask him about it. Is it just a matter of putting diesel or kerosene in the crankcase and running the engine for a while? Thanks

Do not run it on Kerosene or Diesel. Hand crank only if you absolutely must.

Those are some of the finest motors ever built. They are still in business. SOLAS approved engines.

Could be the wrong type of filter. IE, on some, the oil goes IN at the centre hole, and on others it goes in at the surrounding holes.

Remove the filter and bar the engine over by hand and see where the oil comes out on the base. Then examine the filter, most have a rubber non-return disc covering the surrounding holes from the inside. Make sure that the filter will allow the oil to pass.

Another crazy idea would be that the engine is running backwards, not impossible!

Most of the time, this problem is caused by double sealing rings. The old one is not correctly removed and the new one is not fitting direct to the engine block. Check if the sealing ring has a good fit to the block. You can check this with small strips of papier around a new filter. Strips must be even in force when pulled back.

And of course you must use the correct filter cartridge.

I also have the same engine but with Sail drive. The engine has been refit totally (cylinder etc...), the gaskets of the SD have been changed. A few 1000 euro spent later... i still have oil coming out and water coming in the SD. (the gasket changing has been made by a bukh specialist...) Apart that... no pb (except the fact that each time I check the engine I have an heartattack!)
