Help! dealer rip off?

Hi, need a new starter for a Beta marine BV1505 35.7hp. Just got quoted over $600 from the Beta dealers which seem, shall we say a little excessive!!!! A search on EBay showed apparently the same part for $86 but no confirmation that it is correct in the lisy of applications. The engine plate states that for parts you quote WOC No K18288. Anyone know what the WOC number is?
Can't get the old one as itis in Aruba and I am in Canada, I need to take the new one down on my next trip

Note any casting numbers or stamped numbers on the housing, measure the register diameter, count the number of teeth and go to a place that sells starter motors not engines

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

Find a Kubota tractor dealer and ask them. If you have the starter with you take it to a rebuilder. maybe 200.00 tops for a rebuild.

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

My starter burned out 5 years ago due to a stuck start button. An new OEM starter was over $500 and one shop said they could rewind my old one for "only" $250. I found a aftermarket starter and with 2 day shipping it was $103. People said it wouldn't last, but it's been 5 years.

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

Get the motor model (it's a Kubota) and hunt down a generic starter. These motors are popular in industrial machinery, tractors, lawn mowers etc so finding a non marine supplier with a non marine price tag shouldn't be an issue.

Roland,
the key number here is the V1505 in your picture. that is the Kubota series and really all you need to know. Any Kubota tractor dealer will have one in stock and I am sure much less than $600 but will be more than ebay.
I have a V1505 at the house with a starter on it if you need some specific info.
No idea what the WOC No K18288 is.

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

I have found Beta diesel to be the most reasonable for parts of all the manufacturers I've dealt with and 5 years after installing my 50 I still call the US distributor in NC for all kinds of technical advice on a regular basis and get great help! Did you ask for the Kubota part # when you found the price too high, they usually give it freely if applicable! In my experience (and others that I know) the term "rip off" usually doesn't usually apply to them. Of course my past diesels were a Westerbeke and a Volvo, fine diesels but the parts!
Haven't been to Aruba but spent a few years in Curaçao and you could probably have it rebuilt when you return to the boat

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

Thanks all and apologies to Beta, they are a great company and stunningly helpful. I was reeling somewhat from the quote and feeling annoyed, I think because Beta have always been so good in the past. Anyway I managed to get conformation of the OEM part number which means I can get one in Canada for $131.50 which is about what I expected it to be. Why do they have to have so many Part numbers? This is the list, all for the same motor -

NIPPONDENSO 028000-8320, 028000-8321, 228000-1530, 228000-1531, 128000-3590, 128000-3591, 128000-9950, 128000-9951, 228000-0790, 228000-0791,

KUBOTA 15504-63010, 15504-63011, 15504-63012, 16611-63011, 16611-63012, 126611-63013, 15741-63010, 15741-63011, 16612-63011, 16612-63012, 16871-63010, 16871-63011, 16871-63012

Does make life difficult!

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

According to this Beta catalog:

http://www.betamarine.fr/piece/beta35_38.pdf

Beta part number is 600-00918, which is available here Beta Marine 5 Series 38 600 00918 600 000 64 Starter Motor | eBay

for 193.00 under the Beta p/n.

This looks like the same starter

for 85.00, from these people, Starter Fits Bobcat Case Gehl Kubota Toro Trenchers Mowers Skid Steers 98-9705

No guarantees though, it looks like there are at least a couple of options...

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

Any Alternator/Generator/Starter shop can re-build it for around $100. Do not know what is in Alert but lots of choice in Nanaimo.

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

People saw the aftermarket are junk and will not last that long. So I bought 2, was still $200 less and the spare is still sitting in the box after 4 years. Caveat is to install one, use it for a month, then install the spare. They say when they fail, it is usually in that timeframe and the warranty is usually 90 days to a year.

Re: Help! dealer rip off????

I have a marinized Kabota 1505-E. Parts can be had from any tractor dealer. This engine is on many devices including B7810 loader and KX 71-3 excavator. If ordering from Kobota you need to specify the equipment. I'm told they cannot look up parts by engine model. Hope this helps. On starters it may well be repairable and I would check that first. Any decent auto mechanic should be able to rebuild one.
